Straits Times readers to be first to get hands on Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone

Be one of the first 20 people in the world to take home Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S5 smartphone.

While the Galaxy S5 will only be launched in several markets on April 11, The Straits Times, together with Samsung Asia, will be inviting 40 readers to a Straits Times Appreciates Readers (Star) event on April 10, where they can test out the phone, as well as the new Gear 2 smart watch accessory. 20 of them will walk away with the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Gear 2 accessory in a lucky draw at the event. The other 20 will receive a $100 Samsung voucher each.

Featuring a 5.1-inch display and powered by a 2.5GHz quad core processor, the water and dust proof phone has a heart rate monitor and a faster 16MP camera, as well as a new biometric sensor that enables users to access the phone with their fingerprint.

Galaxy S5 owners here will be among the first in the world to be able to pay for items through PayPal by using their fingerprint as a authenticator.

Even though Apple’s iPhone 5S has a biometric sensor, it can only be used to unlock the device and pay for items within Apple’s App Store.

The Galaxy S5 is priced at $1,068 and the Gear 2 will be priced at $398. While Samsung Asia has not announced the local launch date, all three telcos have started taking pre-orders for the Galaxy S5.

To sign up for the Star event, send an e-mail to stdled@sph.com.sg with the subject “The Straits Times/Samsung GALAXY S5 LTE”, along with your name, NRIC number, mobile number and e-mail address.
