Sony bets on 4K ultra high-definition technologies

LAS VEGAS - Sony clearly sees 4K or ultra high-definition (HD), four times the resolution of full HD at 3,840 by 2,160 pixels, as its future after announcing a series of 4K related products in International CES (formerly known as Consumer Electronic Show) 2013.

Sony adds two new 4K LED TVs with a 55-inch and 65-inch variants to the existing 84-inch model that is priced at a whopping $35,999. These two 4K LED TVs, with integrated 4K upscaling and onboard passive 3-D, seek to offer consumers 4K experience a lower price point. But local pricing is yet to be announced with a tentative shipping date from April 2013 onwards.

In addition, Sony also showed off a 56-inch prototype 4K OLED TV as well as a prototype of its first 4K consumer camcorder. Sony also plans to introduce the first 4K content distribution service in US this year to allow consumers enjoy 4K native content from Sony Pictures Entertainment.

It is obvious that Sony is trying to create its own 4K eco-system before other TV manufacturers. With Samsung, LG and Toshiba announcing their 4K TVs too, the competition for 4K TVs is heating up.
