Android smartphone users here will finally get free voice- guided navigation via the Google Maps app.

The free navigation software, named Google Maps Navigation (Beta), requires an Android smartphone running Android version 1.6 and above, and is included as a part of Google Maps for Android version 3.2 and above. Just about any Android smartphone launched since last year will get this free navigation service.

The Straits Times discovered this morning, on Google's website, that Google added Singapore and Hong Kong to the list of 41 countries where the app will be made available. Google confirmed that the app is on its way but could not indicate when.

Google is not the first to introduce voice guided navigation to Singapore. Since last year, Nokia Drive, a free voice guided navigation app, has been included with Nokia smartphones using Microsoft's Windows Phone mobile operating system.
