CES 2014: How Michael Bay bombed his appearance at Samsung's event
LAS VEGAS - No one expected Transformers' mega-director Michael Bay to show up for Samsung's keynote on the eve of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).
Then again, no one expected him to come on stage for less than three minutes, and leave with just an apology either.
Mr Bay was apparently to talk about Ultra HD TV.
"You're known for such unbelievable action, what inspires you? How do you come with these unbelievable ideas?" Samsung executive Joe Stinziano asked Mr Bay.
"Ummm... I create visual worlds that are so beyond everyone's normal life experiences and Hollywood is a place that creates... uhmm.... a viewer escape. And what I try to do as a director..." Mr Bay replied, fumbling over his words. He then walked off stage abruptly, his head hung low.
The audience was stunned. Was it some sort of CES stunt? Was he coming back? How much did Samsung pay for him to do a three-minute show and tell?
Then the jokes started coming in. "You know famed director Michael Bay? He loves to blow things up in his movies right? Well, he just bombed at CES."
"Michael Bay has just been recognised as the Best Of Show at CES 2014. And nothing exploded."
The most bizarre thing to me was how unprepared he was. He muttered something about the teleprompter failing, so he said he wanted to wing it.
Well, he tried but the long pause after the question posed to him on stage by Mr Stinziano meant that he was unprepared for it. And it was obvious he didn't have a clue as to what to say.
After the keynote, a Samsung representative said that the teleprompter was working, so there is still some uncertainty as to what prompted his walk out.
Some are saying that he had a meltdown on stage. I highly doubt it. It's the very act of a man unprepared. Which was unfortunate because I was very keen on finding out what one of Hollywood's biggest director was planning on doing with Samsung's curved TV.
Later, in response to the boo-boo, Bay posted on his blog: "Wow! I just embarrassed myself at CES – I was about to speak for Samsung for this awesome Curved 105-inch UHD TV. I rarely lend my name to any products, but this one is just stellar. I got so excited to talk, that I skipped over the Exec VP’s intro line and then the teleprompter got lost. Then the prompter went up and down – then I walked off."
"I guess live shows aren’t my thing," Bay added.
People think Bay wings his movies. Perhaps. But he sure couldn't wing a live show.
