Tokyo beat Istanbul in 2020 Olympics host city race; Madrid out in first round
The Japanese city of Tokyo has been awarded the right to host the 2020 Olympic Games at the 125th International Olympic Committee Session in Buenos Aires on Saturday.
Tokyo defeated Istanbul in a secret ballot among members of the IOC, winning 60 votes to 36. Istanbul had earlier edged out Madrid 49-45 in a tie-breaker in the first round of voting after both were locked at 26 votes each. Japan had 42 votes in Round 1. It was the third consecutive time that Madrid had bid to host a Games and lost.
Tokyo was bidding for the second consecutive time after losing out in the race for the 2016 Games, which went to the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.
The 2020 Games will be the second Olympic Games hosted by Japan. In 1964, Tokyo became the first Asian City to host the modern Games.
