PRETORIA (AFP) - South Africa's superstar sprinter Oscar Pistorius appeared in court on Friday to face charges that he murdered his model girlfriend on Valentine's Day.
Twenty-six-year-old Pistorius - known worldwide as the "Blade Runner" because of his carbon fibre prostheses - arrived at the Pretoria magistrate's court in the back of a police van with his head covered by a jacket.
Pistorius, who made history when he became the first double-amputee to compete against able-bodied athletes at the Olympics last year, is expected to apply for bail but police have said they would oppose it.
He is accused of killing cover girl Reeva Steenkamp, who was shot four times with a 9mm pistol registered in Pistorius' name. She suffered wounds to the head and hand and died in the early hours of Thursday.
