English giants Manchester United were thumped 1-4 by Portugal's Sporting Lisbon in the semi-finals of the Under-19 NexLions Cup on Friday evening.

In front of a crowd of around 5,000 at the Jalan Besar Stadium, Sporting were the deserved winners against a lacklustre United youth outfit.

The Red Devils took the lead through striker James Wilson in the 38th minute. But their opponents hit back right after the break, equalising through captain Carlos Mane.

United midfielder Jack Barmby squandered a penalty in the 47th minute and the Portuguese made their opponents pay. A strike from Cristian Ponde and a brace from Edelino Ie sent them through to Sunday's final.
