Local athletes set to gain big time under new Sports Excellence Scholarships scheme

Top local athletes who prove that they have what it takes to make their mark among the world's best could receive stipends of around $90,000 a year.

This was revealed during a briefing the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) and the Singapore Sports Institute (SSI) conducted on Wednesday afternoon at Spex House, near the SSC headquarters in Kallang.

The five-figure sum is the median amount awarded to elite athletes who prove they have the potential to reach the Olympics or excel at their sport's world championships-level event.

Athletes on lower tiers of support will receive between $24,000 and $60,000 (median) a year in stipends.

It comes on top of support that will help athletes with training and competitions, coaching and equipment costs.

Both able-bodied and disabled athletes will come under the scheme.

Said SSC chief executive officer Lim Teck Yin: "Many people have a misperception that Vision 2030 has de-emphasised elite sport. (That is) nothing further from the truth."

Vision 2030, introduced in 2011, is aimed at promoting a strong sporting culture among Singaporeans.

"Elite sport, high-performance sport, is an integral part of Vision 2030. This is the highest level (of) attention that has ever been paid to the entire high-performance system," added Lim.
