LionsXII crowned 2013 MSL champions

The LionsXII have been crowned champions of the 2013 Malaysian Super League (MSL), following a 4-0 victory over Felda United on Tuesday night at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

The win landed Singapore a first Malaysian league title since 1994, with one game to spare.

After having a goal disallowed in a goal-less first half, the LionsXII got a dream start to the second half, with three goals finding the net within 15 minutes.

Fazrul Nawaz then quickly followed up with a third goal just three minutes later to put the home side firmly ahead.

Shahfiq Ghani then sealed the title with another goal in the 83rd minute to complete the LionsXII's biggest win this season.

With a four-point lead into the season's final two matches, the LionsXII needed only to match the results of closest rivals Selangor and Johor Darul Takzim. Both teams had a later kick-off time on Tuesday, although their results are now inconsequential.

Besides getting to lift the MSL trophy in front of their home supporters, the LionsXII will also be rewarded with a cheque for RM750,000 (S$299,595), which will be divided among the players.

The team played to a sold-out crowd of 7,650, many of whom showed up at the stadium as early as 2pm to get a good seat.

The LionsXII will play their last game of the season, away to Kelantan, on Saturday.
