FRANKFURT (AP) - Bayern Munich president Uli Hoennes says coach Jupp Heynckes would have liked to stay another year but cleared the way for Pep Guardiola to be hired for next season.
Hoeness tells ZDF television "I think he would have liked to stay another year" and that Bayern was grateful "that he made it possible (to hire Guardiola)" and "did not make a scene".
Bayern announced a three-year deal with Guardiola on Wednesday and said at the time Heynckes had decided to retire at the end of the season.
Hoeness says Heynckes could have been persuaded to stay another season but that Bayern had to make the move for Guardiola when the opportunity presented itself.
