Golf: McIlroy and Woods both eliminated at Match Play
MARANA, Arizona (AP) - Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods were both eliminated from the Match Play Championship on Thursday - the first time in 11 years the top two seeds were knocked out on the first day.
Shane Lowry made a four-foot par putt on the 18th hole to eliminate world No. 1 McIlroy, making it three years out of four that the top seed went home after day one.
Moments later, Charles Howell III beat the second-seeded Woods on the 17th hole. Howell nearly holed a wedge for birdie on the 16th and made a 25-foot birdie on the 16th to seize control.
Along with McIlroy and Woods, a more welcome departure was the snow which blanketed the course on Wednesday.
