Former Malaysian badminton star Gunalan dies at 68
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Former Malaysian badminton star Gunalan Panchacharan, who was one of the world's finest players in the 1970s, died on Wednesday at the age of 68, a report said.
Punch, as he was known in badminton circles, and his doubles mate Ng Boon Bee were a force in world badminton in the early 1970s, winning the prestigious All-England championship and other major titles in 1971.
Gunalan also won singles titles at the 1970 Asian Games and 1974 Commonwealth Games.
He later served as a top official in Malaysia's badminton governing body and the Badminton World Federation, and was elected the latter's vice-president in 1997.
