Singapore bodybuilder Joan Liew came out tops in the Women's Physique (Tall) category attempt at the Arnold Amateur International Bodybuilding, Fitness, Figure, Bikini and Physique Championships in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday.

The 39-year-old co-founder of local gym Fitness Factory pipped 23 other competitors from 13 countries to be crowned champion.

"As an athlete, you have to improve every year," she said after her victory at the US tournament, which is tied to former bodybuilding champion and movie star, Arnold Schwarzenegger. "During the competition I was very calm and did not feel nervous at all. After the win, I must say I was very happy and also rather emotional, because this award is truly special to me. I have worked 20 years to get it."

The annual event in Columbus, Ohio is part of the four-day Arnold Sports Festival and is sanctioned by the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness.
