Basketball: Olympiakos fined $47k, lose points over crowd violence plus fan ban
ATHENS (REUTERS) - Greek basketball team Olympiakos Piraeus have been fined 27,800 euros (S$46,665), hit with a two-point deduction for the upcoming A1 League season and will play four games under a spectator ban following crowd violence during last season's play-offs.
Giorgos Bartzokas' team lost out to Panathinaikos in last season's domestic play-off finals after game three was stopped and later abandoned owing to crowd trouble.
Having taken a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series, Panathinaikos were leading the match 76-72 with 1min 27sec to play when fans invaded the court and showered Panathinaikos players and officials with missiles and flares.
Esake, the Greek top-flight organisers, announced on their website that Olympiakos were fined for "violence inside the stadium, the throwing of objects endangering the safety of players, referees and officials, and making it impossible to continue the match".
