The Li-Ning Singapore Open, which begins on Tuesday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, has been hit by a string of player withdrawals.

A total of 10 new withdrawals were announced during a team managers' meeting at Swissotel the Stamford on Monday.

Among them: Indonesian men's singles players Simon Santoso, Sony Dwi Kuncoro, Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka, women's singles players Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand and P.V. Sindhu of India, as well as China's women's doubles pair and top seeds Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang.

This comes after the withdrawal of China's badminton superstar Lin Dan, who announced earlier this month that he would be giving the week-long tournament a miss.

The players are set to be given a fine by the Badminton World Federation for their late withdrawals.

Despite the withdrawals, the Singapore Open will still feature reigning Olympic champions in all categories other than the men's singles.

Bobby Lee, chief executive officer of the Singapore Badminton Association, is not worried that the withdrawals will affect crowd figures at the event.

He said: "Most of the teams are still here. The South Koreans and Japanese are out in full force."

Singapore's shuttlers, who will mostly have to negotiate through the qualifying rounds to get to the main draw, will be in action on Tuesday.
