The Singapore Writers Festival is drawing the crowds - despite getting off to a bumpy start yesterday evening with two star attractions conspicuously absent.

More than half of the $15 festival passes for the 10-day literary event have been snapped up - even though Man Asian Literary Prize winner Shin Kyung Sook has pulled out for health reasons.

Pulitzer Prize-winning American writer Michael Cunningham also failed to make it to the launch at the Singapore Management University Campus Green, as his flight here was delayed by Hurricane Sandy.

Festival organisers said Cunningham is expected to make his scheduled appearances today and tomorrow, as is former professional wrestler Mick Foley, who is also still in transit. Singapore Literature Prize winner Simon Tay is taking Shin's place on today's panel about book awards.
