Transport ministry open to review of how COEs are categorised

Minister of State for Transport Josephine Teo dropped a hint in Parliament on Tuesday that there might be a change in the way Certificates of Entitlement (COE) are categorised.

In response to a Jurong GRC MP Ang Wei Neng who suggested pegging COE premiums to the Open Market Value rather than the engine capacity of cars, she said the Government was open to reviewing the way COEs are categorised.

"I would urge the member to be patient," she added.

The Straits Times has previously reported that the Government will embark on a review of the COE system.

Mrs Teo also said that the Government is looking into ways to help hawkers and others who depend on light goods vehicles to run their businesses, as COE prices for these vehicles have gone up.

She was replying to a question from Aljunied GRC MP Low Thia Khiang.
