Police arrested a 38-year-old man for carrying a knife in West Coast Road on Tuesday, following a tip-off from a member of the public.
Mr Rohani Julawi, 66, was in the area that day at about 6.10pm, when he met other people who told him about a man behaving suspiciously nearby. Mr Rohani called the police immediately after noticing that the man had a suspicious object tucked under his T-shirt.
Officers from Clementi Police Division responded, searched the suspect and found a knife in his possession. If found guilty, the suspect could be jailed for up to three years and receive at least six strokes of the cane for carrying an offensive weapon in a public place.
Commander of Clementi Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Melvin Yong, commended Mr Rohani for his alertness and public-spiritedness. Mr Rohani is also a member of West Coast Protectors, a residents' watch group in the West Coast constituency. DAC Yong said: "Mr Rohani is a good example of the active and engaged resident whom the Police is keen to work with to enhance the safety and security of our neighbourhoods."
