Third set of Native Orchids of Singapore commemorative coins available

The Singapore Mint has unveiled the third set of Native Orchids of Singapore commemorative coins.

It is being launched after the overwhelming response from collectors and members of the public for the first two sets in 2011 and 2012.

The coins, which highlight Singapore's identity as a Garden City, were produced in collaboration with the Singapore Botanic Gardens' Orchid Conservation Programme. The two native species of orchids featured on this year's set are the Bulbophyllum flabellum-veneris (an increasingly endangered species in Singapore), and the Dendrobium crumenatum (commonly known as the 'Pigeon Orchid').

The coins can be pre-ordered at www.singaporemint.com until July 26. The issue date is Aug 2. They are available individually at $148, or at $300 for a set of two at The Singapore Mint's retail outlets. In addition, 500 of these coins will be encased in translucent slab capsules for their "superior proof quality standard". Each of the specially selected coins are priced at $188 each, and availability may be subjected to balloting.
