Community bonding can be built by adopting community leaders who bring neighbours together, said Senior Parliamentary Secretary for National Development and Defence Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman on Thursday.

Dr Maliki suggested the idea of a kepala (Malay for head), or village head, who is a leader, host, and friend to every household in the estate.

He once sought the help of a kepala to find a special needs teacher who was able to help a boy in his constituency after he was diagnosed with autism.

Dr Maliki was speaking to an audience of 150 during the first community building seminar, jointly organised by the Housing Board and the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre. It is one of the events in HDB's annual Community Week, which aims to build cohesive communities in housing estates.
