To all our Twitter followers, thank you.
The most followed Twitter account by users in Singapore is The Straits Times' account, @STcom.
ST's account, which has 290,931 followers as of Thursday evening, ranked above international accounts like American talkshow The Ellen Show, international humour site 9GAG and American singer Taylor Swift.
A ranking of what Singaporeans follow most on Twitter was released by the United States-based social media platform as part of its eighth anniversary. Similar ranking lists were done for other countries including Australia, India and Japan.
There are an estimated 2.56 million Twitter users in Singapore and about 241 million active users globally.
When it comes to Singapore-based Twitter accounts, @STcom is also no. 1 among Singapore users, said Twitter.
It ranks higher than those administered by other news organisations like Channel NewsAsia and local bloggers Xiaxue and Mr Brown.
Straits Times' editor Warren Fernandez said: "We're striving to deliver on our promise to get the latest news and insights to ST readers wherever they are and whenever they want it. This means online and via mobile, on social media like Twitter, Facebook and others, as well as in print.
"Being named No 1 on Twitter among Singaporeans will encourage our newsroom team to keep at it."
Mr Parminder Singh, Twitter's managing director for Southeast Asia, India, Middle East and North Africa, said: "Singaporeans are busy people and love to know what is happening in real-time...So it is no surprise that they love to follow the local news media on Twitter and why checking news is one of the top daily behaviours on our platform by Singaporeans."
The most popular tweet by ST was during the severe haze last year.
"#SGHaze update: PSI is 321 at 10.55pm @NEAsg" was retweeted 3,392 times.
A tweet which was sent earlier this month "#Singapore sends C130 aircraft to search for missing #MAS aircraft http://bit.ly/1ffawHJ #MH370 #MalaysiaAirlines" was also popular with followers and retweeted 2,775 times.
To thank readers for their support, The Straits Times is giving away $100 shopping vouchers along with a goody bag to 20 readers who follow @STcom.
Just retweet any Straits Times story from now till Sunday midnight with #STthanksyou for a chance to win. Winners will be announced on Monday.
