Speak Good English movement gears up for new initiatives

Stick a note of a favourite English phrase or quote on a personal item so that it is easier to refer to and use it. That is a recommendation from the Speak Good English movement as it gears up for new initiatives in its 12th year of promoting correct usage.

This time round, it wants Singaporeans to cultivate a habit of using the language after successfully raising awareness of the importance of good English.

Surveys show awareness has been achieved, said Mr Goh Eck Kheng, chairman of the movement, at a press briefing on Wednesday at independent bookstore Books Actually.

He added that more could be done to put this awareness into practice. "In the beginning, there was a need to help people realise that there is a difference between Singlish and standard English.
