Sixth man to plead guilty to his role in the Little India riot jailed 18 weeks

A sixth man to plead guilty to his role in the Little India riot on Dec 8 last year was jailed 18 weeks yesterday.

Indian national Krishnan Saravanan, 31, was convicted of the amended charge of failing to disperse despite being lawfully commanded to do so.

He had originally faced a rioting charge, which carried a maximum sentence of seven years in prison and caning, as opposed to two years and/or a fine for disobeying dispersal commands. His sentence was backdated to the date of his arrest on Dec 9 last year.

Saravanan was the sixth among 25 charged in relation to the riot to plead guilty. Five others were sentenced under the same amended charge to serve between 15 and 18 weeks in jail in the last two months. Cases against the remaining 19 charged with rioting are pending in court.
