More than 25 SingHealth doctors offered free basic health screening to 26 needy elderly residents from Henderson and Bukit Merah on Saturday, as part of the Singapore General Hospital's (SGH) wider efforts to extend care beyond the hospital walls.

The doctors also joined 280 volunteers comprising nurses, allied health professionals and administrative staff to clean and clear away clutter to reduce the risk of accidents and spruce up residents' homes as they usher in the Chinese New Year.

It is the first time that the doctors took part in the initiative, which is part of SGH's annual Project GroomOver. SGH is part of health-care cluster SingHealth.

In addition to spring cleaning, needy residents also received hampers and household items such as pillows, blankets, storage boxes, fans and rice cookers.

Project GroomOver is one of the community outreach efforts by the SGH Volunteer Club which started in 2006 with 200 volunteers.
