It has taken years of hard work and investments to grow Singapore's attractiveness as a key tourist destination but upgrades and enhancements must continue, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Speaking at the official opening of River Safari on Friday, he said travellers are becoming increasingly spoilt for choice. They are not attracted just by iconic buildings or infrastructure, and want different and unique experiences customised to meet their interests.

Companies must provide more interesting and varied options. And workers must deliver higher quality service. On its part, the government has set aside almost $1 billion in a Tourism Development Fund to help fund new tourism concepts among other initiatives, he said.

Turning to Asia's first and only river-themed wildlife park, Mr Lee said that the River Safari together with the Zoo and Night Safari will make the Mandai cluster an even more exciting nature destination.
