A Singaporean has for the first time topped the world's largest video game fighting tournament.

Professional gamer Ho Kun Xian, 22, was in a neck-and-neck race with his Japanese rival in the grand finals of Evo Championships 2013 on Monday before walking away with the championship to mark the end of the three-day event in Las Vegas.

Mr Ho won in the game Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition (version 2012). It was one out of nine games - including Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Injustice: Gods Among Us - played during the tournament, which attracted 1,600 participants around the world.

Previous years winners were mostly Americans and Japanese, although a Singaporean came in second place - for the first time too - for the game Soulcalibur V in last year's tournament held in Nevada, United States.
