Singapore can still do more to promote the Chinese language and culture: Swee Keat
Singapore can still do more to promote the Chinese language and culture, said Education Minister Heng Swee Keat on Saturday. He was speaking at an event in Pasir Ris to mark the Singapore Chinese Teachers' Union's 60th anniversary.
Mr Heng encouraged more people to take up grants to write Chinese books and plays, and said arts groups here could also foster greater appreciation of the language through their productions.
Union president Madam Lian Hwee Eng suggested loosening restrictions for students to study Higher Chinese, and lauded the teachers for their passion and creativity in inspiring students.
"Just as a person's sixtieth birthday is a momentous occasion, this anniversary is a milestone for the union," she said. The union will publish a 60th anniversary commemorative book in early 2014.
