Seven arrested for beating up two people

Seven suspects aged between 17 and 19 were arrested by the police on Sunday morning for allegedly rioting on two occasions in the wee hours of that morning along Jiak Kim Street and Kim Seng Road.

In a statement on Tuesday, the police said they responded to a call about fighting along Jiak Kim Street, home to nightclub Zouk, at about 3.56am on Sunday. The victim reported that he had been set upon by a group of people, who fled after punching and kicking him.

While the officers were investigating the case, police were alerted of another case of fighting nearby, along Kim Seng Road, at about 4.57am. The police arrived and found that this victim had also been attacked by a group of people who fled before the police arrived.

Officers suspected that the assailants could be the same for both cases. They arrested the suspects at various locations later in the day after conducting extensive enquiries and checking footage from closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the vicinity to establish their identities.

If found guilty of rioting, the suspects face imprisonment of up to seven years and caning.
