Safety issues at spas come under close scrutiny
Safety standards at establishments offering spa facilities such as steam baths are found to be lacking, as currently there is no safety regulation in place for the spa and wellness industry.
Safety issues in spa and wellness establishments have come under scrutiny after a Coroner Court found that an elderly woman who died at a steam bath in a spa did not receive any proper help for some 40 minutes.
Madam Loh Yoke Chan, 73, was having a steam bath at a skincare centre in Jurong East in March last year when a beautician found her unconscious.
While there were four staff present, none of them called for the ambulance immediately. The ambulance arrived 40 minutes later after Madam Loh was found. She died of multi-organ failure eight days later.
