Punggol East by-election: SDA's Desmond Lim out of the race, thanks voters

Singapore Democratic Alliance's candidate Desmond Lim is out of the Punggol East by-election race.

Speaking to reporters at about 9.45pm at North Vista Secondary School, he said the SDA had to contest to keep the political flame alive.

"I hereby thank the residents of Punggol East nonetheless," he said.

Mr Lim said that whatever the result, it will not dampen his spirit or that of his party. Asked if he would lose his deposit, he would only say: "Well, you will know the results."

SDA representatives were reported as saying he was heading home to be with his family.

The other three candidates are People's Action Party's Dr Koh Poh Koon, Workers' Party's Ms Lee Li Lian and Reform Party's Mr Kenneth Jeyaretnam.

Ballot boxes from the 10 polling centres were brought to two counting centres at North Vista Secondary School and Rivervale Primary School. Returning officer Yam Ah Mee will announce the results at North Vista.
