Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong congratulated the new pope, Pope Francis, on his election.

In a Facebook post on Thursday evening, PM Lee wrote that relations between Singapore and the Holy See are warm as both parties "have worked together to promote equity and development, and foster peace and religious harmony".

He added that he looked forward to continue cooperating with the Catholic Church, the Apostolic Nuncio in Singapore Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli and newly appointed Coadjutor Archbishop William Goh "towards our shared goals".
