Predator of young boys deserves stiff sentence, says judge

A DEAF and mute man, who preyed on and sexually assaulted young boys in Geylang Bahru. and who stole bicycles, was jailed for 10 years.
In passing sentence today, District Judge Roy Neighbour said he agreed with the prosecution that Juma'at Tahir had displayed predatory behaviour towards his victims.
"I cannot ignore the public interest to impose a stiff sentence to express society's revulsion for acts of outraging modesty and anal intercourse on innocent young boys. The long-term psychological harm on these victims cannot be dismissed."
Judge Neighbour said that Juma'at's borderline intelligence did not preclude him from being found criminally culpable as he had committed the sex acts on the same victim on two occasions in a public area.
