When Dr Tony Tan visited Jakarta as a young banker in the 1970s, the capital had only one five-star hotel. Forty years on, Indonesia has developed tremendously and is a vibrant middle-income country, he noted at the end of his five-day state visit, illustrating how Singaporeans should take the opportunity to update their understanding of Southeast Asia's largest economy.
Dr Tan told Singapore reporters he hopes more Singaporeans will get to know their neighbours better as the region seeks to become a close-knit community.
