It is about 1pm on a Monday afternoon at a shopping mall. Shop owners are sitting on the cement floors of their shops, unpacking plastic-wrapped clothes from cardboard boxes and laying them into piles on the floor. Plastic bags filled with clothes are stacked atop one another.
While this is unseen at most shopping malls, it is an everyday affair at City Plaza. Standing between Guillemard Road and Tanjong Katong Road, the mall has gained a reputation since the late nineties for being the biggest fashion wholesale mall in Singapore. Within the mall are mainly shops selling women’s clothings.
