A baby girl with her umbilical cord still attached was found abandoned outside a terrace house just off Sixth Avenue on Friday night.

Police said they received a call at about 9.20pm requesting for assistance at the home. The case has been classified the case as Abandonment of a Child and investigations are ongoing.

A middle-aged woman who lives at the house told The Straits Times that it was her Indonesian maid who found the baby when she was taking out the trash. The baby was wrapped in a towel and left at her gate. "I don't know why the baby was abandoned there," said the woman, who declined to be named.

Neighbours said they saw more than 10 uniformed policeman outside the house on Friday night. A next-door neighbour, Mrs Selvarajah, 72, said she was woken up by the police at 11pm and asked if she had seen anybody carrying a baby outside her house.

The Straits Times understand that the baby, whose race has yet to be established, was brought to KK Women's and Children's Hospital for observation. She appeared fine and had no signs of injuries. The Ministry of Social and Family Development has been notified of the case and will care for the baby in the meantime.
