New student care centres to be set up in 14 schools this month

Fourteen new school-based Student Care Centres will be set up this month.

These centres are run by Voluntary Welfare Organizations who plan before and after school programmes for pupils in addition to helping them with their homework.

The ramp up in student care centres has come from increase demand from working parents.

With these new centres, the total number of such centres in schools is 80.

Education Minister Heng Swee Keat announced this Wednesday when he visited St Hilda's Primary School.

MOE said it has provided additional infrastructure in all new and upgraded primary schools to facilitate these centres.

Among the schools with new student care centres are Balestier Hill Primary School and White Sands Primary School.

MOE said that there are plans for more school-based student care centres to be up by the end of this year.
