Work has begun inside the Changi Prison compound for a new $118.5 million Prison Headquarters.

There will be four buildings and several smaller ancillary buildings that will house office facilities, a multi-purpose hall, a club house and an auditorium. These will all be built on vacant land next to the prison complex and be completed in 2014.

The project was announced yesterday by Singapore-based Sembawang Engineers and Constructors (SEC), which is owned by the Punj Lloyd Group, an Indian conglomerate.

While the construction group has previously completed institutional projects such as schools and hospitals, this is the first time it is working on a prisons project.
