More underground pedestrian links proposed for malls
URA also doubles grant for building these walkways
More underground pedestrian links between buildings are being proposed in an attempt to make the city a more pedestrian-friendly one in all kinds of weather.
Most of these new walkways will be in the main shopping belt of Orchard Road, where many malls are still unconnected.
To encourage building owners to construct these underground links, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) will double an existing grant that helps them defray construction costs.
It will also withhold permission to redevelop or make major alterations to any building where it wants an underground link, unless part of that walkway is built.
