More HDB flats being built to cater to singles: Khaw

NATIONAL Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan said the building of HDB flats has been ramped up slightly, to cater to singles as well as families.
He was responding in Parliament to Mr Liang Eng Hwa (Holland-Bukit Timah GRC), who asked if there was enough HDB flats to meet projected demand, and if HDB would consider keeping a reserve of surplus flats to meet unanticipated demand.
Mr Khaw replied that the HDB has been building 25,000 flats each year for the past two years, as compared to only 15,000 marriages involving Singapore citizens each year.
But because of additional demand coming from upgraders, downgraders and second-time applicants, the ministry has kept to the target of 25,000 flats a year.
