MOH releases statement on H7N9 following first reported case in Taiwan

Hospitals in Singapore remain on heightened alert and are prepared for the possibility of the H7N9 virus hitting Singapore.

The Health Ministry (MOH) said this in a statement issued on Thursday morning in response to the first confirmed case of H7N9 in Taiwan. It added that seven people here have been investigated for the bird flu and all tested negative.

On Wednesday, a 53-year-old man who had been working in the eastern Chinese city of Suzhou, had flu symptoms three days after returning to Taiwan via Shanghai. He was hospitalised on April 16 and remains in critical condition.

MOH's spokesman added that it will continue to monitor the situation closely for further developments. In the meantime, the ministry advises those going to areas affected by H7N9 to remain vigilant and observe the following measures: Avoid direct contact with poultry, birds or their droppings; cook poultry and eggs thoroughly before eating; wash hands frequently with soap and water; avoid crowded places and contact with sick people with fever; and wear a mask when you have respiratory symptoms or are feeling unwell.
