MasterCard cardholders spent $1.74b during GSS
About US$1.4 billion (S$1.74 billion) was spent during this year's Great Singapore Sale (GSS) among Singaporean and foreign MasterCard cardholders.
This is a 7 per cent increase from what was spent for the same period between end May to late July last year.
Cardholders from Australia, the United States (US), Indonesia, Malaysia and Japan emerged as the top five spenders, with Australian and Japanese visitors recording an average of more than 40 per cent increase in total expenditure and the number of transactions against last year's figures.
Visitors from Australia and Indonesia spent the most, or about $7.3 million, at department stores. Eating establishments were patronised most by American and Japanese visitors while Malaysian cardholders were big on computers, computer accessories and software, spending a total of $3.1 million in that sector.
