The sky's the limit for buildings in Singapore, as more and more of them hit 40 storeys and above.

Marina Bay Suites, which made the news after a fire broke out on its 65th floor on Monday night killing two security guards, is currently the 13th tallest building in the Republic at 227m high. Marina Bay Residences nearby is also 227m high.

The 66-storey Marina Bay Suites, which is in the heart of the Marina Bay Financial Centre, has 221 units and was ready in 2013. So far, 203 units have been sold.

It was developed by a consortium controlled by Keppel Land, Cheung Kong Holdings and Hongkong Land Holdings. Housing agents say units cost $2,700 to $3,000 per sq ft. The development has 108 three-bedroom units – all sold – 110 four-bedroom apartments and three penthouses with private pools, one of which fetched $19.3 million. Each floor typically houses four apartments, each served by a private lift lobby.

The tallest buildings in Singapore are currently Republic Plaza, the OUB Centre (One Raffles Place) and UOB Plaza One. All three stand at 280m tall. That equals about 112 statues of Sir Stamford Raffles piled on top of one another.

Singapore's tallest buildings, however, cannot compare to the world's super skyscrapers.

Dubai's Burj Khalifa takes top spot, peaking at a stunning 829m with 163 floors and 57 elevators. The Shanghai Tower in China comes in second at 632.11m, while the Makkah Clock Royal Tower of Saudi Arabia takes an honourable third at 601m.
