It has been several months since banks required customers to activate their debit cards for ATM withdrawals abroad but a survey indicates many people are still in the dark.

The Visa online survey, of 100 debit card holders who travel at least once a year, found that 42 per cent were unaware that their cards were now deactivated for overseas ATM withdrawals.

The survey found that 67 per cent did not know how to activate their debit cards. Nearly a quarter said they could not make ATM withdrawals overseas as they had not activated their cards.

In January, the Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS) said member banks will be deactivating the overseas ATM cash-withdrawal function for their debit and ATM cards.
