The police have arrested a 54-year-old man who is believed to have been involved in two armed robberies in Toa Payoh last week.

In a statement on Tuesday, the police said that a 27-year-old woman told the police last Wednesday that a man had followed her into a lift in Toa Payoh Central. Once inside, he had taken out a penknife, robbed her of $800 in cash, and fled when the lift door opened.

Two days later, a 23-year-old woman reported a similar series of events in a lift in Toa Payoh Lorong 2. She, however, managed to push the man aside when the door opened and ran away before he could rob her. Both incidents happened in the late evening.

Officers from the Tanglin Police Division spotted a suspect fitting the descriptions given by the two women on Monday while conducting a stake-out at Toa Payoh Central. They ambushed the man and found a penknife in his possession which was believed to have been used during the offences.
