In a surprise turn of events on the eve of Deepavali, lawyer M. Ravi has applied to the court to drop his defamation suit against the Law Society and its official Wong Siew Hong.

"With the benefit of time and having absorbed some of the pain inflicted on me, it is within my reach to forgive and forget and to move on," he said in his affidavit which he released today to the media.

It was also "not in the interest of the legal profession to have a public airing of the disagreement between the parties", he said, adding that he wants the Law Society and Mr Wong to bear their own legal costs.

The clash came after Law Society official Wong Siew Hong showed up twice in the High Court in July with a letter from a psychiatrist saying Mr Ravi was unfit to practise due to a relapse of bipolar disorder. Mr Ravi then sued the society for defamation.
