Giant panda Kai Kai turned five on Friday and had a low-key birthday celebration at its den in the River Safari.

For its first birthday spent in Singapore, Kai Kai was treated to a 5kg ice "cake" filled with carrots, apples and high-fibre biscuits. Kai Kai and its female companion, Jia Jia, have settled in their dens since moving in last Thursday for their month-long quarantine. They are adjusting well to their new diet of locally grown bamboo such as sulphur bamboo and hedge bamboo.

Jia Jia, a year younger than Kai Kai, turned four last Monday. Visitors can see the pandas when their exhibit opens in December.
