Jail term cut for civilian who went AWOL for 13 years
A 48-year-old woman who walked out on her Singapore Armed Forces job and was not found for 13 years had her sentence reduced to a year's jail on appeal yesterday.
V. Mariammal was initially sentenced by a subordinate military court to 33 months' jail for desertion. She appealed.
On Tuesday, the five-member to the Military Court of Appeal found that she was erroneously charged with desertion. Justice Choo Han Teck, president of the panel, said she should instead be convicted of being absent without leave, a less serious offence.
The logistics supply technician was employed on a six-year contract until 2001, under a scheme for non-uniformed staff now known as the Defence Executive Scheme, or DXO.
