Hostel technician jailed 6 months for theft

A technician of the firm that installed the card access systems in hostels for university students stole a total of $3,100 in cash, Acer Wong Kum Inn, 21, was jailed for six months.

A district court heard on Friday that in August this year, Wong was employed by a company called Glutz which provided access control systems to the graduate residences of the National University of Singapore. On Aug 18, a European exchange student residing at a hostel in Kent Ridge Road reported a theft to police.

Investigations then revealed that a day earlier Wong had repaired the faulty access control device in the student's room. Noticing that the room was unoccupied, he stole US$500 (S$625) and S$80 kept in a drawer.

Four days later, Wong used his master access card to enter the room of an Australian exchange student in University Town (UTown) off Dover Road to steal $700.
