Higher alcohol 'sin' tax: A look at booze consumption, top tipple choices in Singapore
Drinkers may need to fork out more for a can of beer at the coffee shop or a shot of whisky at the pub with a hefty hike in liquor tax kicking in.
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam announced in his Budget statement last Friday that the liquor tax has been raised by 25 per cent to $88 per litre of alcohol content for wine and spirits, and $60 per litre of alcohol content for beer. Before the increase took effect last Friday, wine and spirits were taxed $70 per litre of alcohol content, and beer $48.
With the tax hike, consumers can expect to pay between 20 cents and 70 cents more for a can or bottle of beer, assuming there is no price mark-up by the retailers.
