About half, or 11,800 students at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) received help with course fees in the form of bursaries in the last academic year.

Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education Hawazi Daipi cited this figure in Parliament on Tuesday, as he sought to assure the House that help was available to low-income students to grant them access to the full range of educational opportunities at ITE.

Students can use their Edusave grants to pay for enrichment activities in Singapore, while two other funds provide help for those going on overseas activities. About 1,600 students last year received help with paying for overseas enrichment activities, said Mr Hawazi.

He was responding to a question from Mr Zainuddin Nordin (Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC), who wanted how many ITE students were receiving financial assistance and what help was in place to keep them in school.
